Best Xbox One Zombie Games to Play in 2016/2017
10) Dead Island 2
2017 should be the year that we finally get to see Dead Island 2, the sequel to the hugely popular zombie game Dead Island. Originally slated for a 2016 release on Xbox One, publisher Deep Silver ran into some problems when the publisher and developer Yager Development parted company, leaving the game without a developer. However, as of March 2016, UK developer Sumo Digital have taken over development, and Dead Island 2 is expected to launch in 2017.
Set several months after the events of the first Dead Island game, Dead Island 2 will take players to California and will feature cities including Los Angeles and San Francisco. Not much is known yet about what changes will be made to Dead Island 2, but we can expect much improved graphics, new characters, new weapons as well as some new features which will be announced in due course. If you’re a Dead Island fan or love a good zombie hack ‘n’ slash, Dead Island 2 should definitely be the game to keep an eye on for your zombie fix. Dead Island 2 has the potential to be one of the best Xbox One zombie games of 2017.
Deadlight: Director’s Cut takes place in an apocalyptic Seattle in the year 1986. Players take the role of Randall Wayne who is an introverted and paranoid survivor who is trying to find his loved ones. Deadlight is a platforming survival horror game, so it plays differently to how most zombie games play out but is nonetheless one of the more enjoyable Xbox One zombie games out there.
As Randall, players must search for a haven known as the “Safe Point” as you survive and make your way through the streets, sewers, and landmarks of a destroyed Seattle. Ammo for guns is scarce, so every shot needs to count, but players have the option to utilise their surroundings to sneak past and evade the zombies if you’re not capable of fighting. Deadlight is not a game about killing as many zombies as possible but is rather a game about playing it smart.
The Director’s Cut edition includes superior controls and new animations, as well as supports full 1080p resolution.
Zombi is a zombie survival game which is set in London, England. Initially developed exclusively for the Wii U under the name ZombiU, Zombi is Ubisoft’s console and PC port of the game, so some features from the Wii U have had to be cut or altered.
One of Zombi‘s biggest selling points is its location, being the only notable zombie game on Xbox One that is set in London, a historic city steeped in history and secrets. It makes for the perfect setting for the zombie apocalypse as players explore well known locations including Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London, both of which have been recreated in authentic detail. Not only are the locations spot on and eery, but the atmosphere in Zombi is what grips players as you never know what’s going to be around the next corner.
To make things even more intense, Zombi includes a permadeath feature which means that once your character dies, he’s/she’s dead forever. However, you are given a new character to play as with your previous character reanimating into a zombie that can be found in the game at the location of your death. If you kill your zombie character, you’re able to take back your supplies that are kept in your backpack, which is visible on your dead character.
When it comes to Xbox One zombie games, the genre has been slow to get started on the platform; however, Dead Rising 3 was one of the first zombie games to release on Xbox One.
If you’re new to Dead Rising, it’s an open-world zombie survival horror game which drops players into the shoes of Nick Ramos who is in Los Perdidos, California, with the game taking place just after the initial outbreak. As you’d expect, the situation is pretty dire with zombies swarming the streets, therefore, players are given the tools to hack and slash their way through thousands of zombies as Nick tries to survive and make it out alive by any means necessary.
Dead Rising 3 features a crafting system which allows players to combine different weapons and items to create more powerful and effective weapons. Players are also able to find and customise certain vehicles to help them explore Los Perdidos as well as mow down zombies who happen to get in your way.
7 Days to Die is an open-world zombie survival game for Xbox One which drops players into the zombie apocalypse and combines elements from the first-person shooter, survival horror, and tower defence genres. Players can choose to survive solo or jump into four-player co-op. There are other modes available including creative mode and PvP, as well as co-op survival which allows players to play split-screen on the same TV, so definitely a great game to play with family or friends.
In 7 Days to Die players get to explore a harsh world looking for loot to survive another day. Once you’ve got your basic survival kit together, players can go about building their own base by mining for resources and crafting. Players can build onto existing structures or construct a base from the ground up. Players can also craft anything from weapons and clothes to tools and vehicles and more. Not only that, but 7 Days to Die takes place in a fully destructible and moldable world, making it unique on the Xbox One.
State of Decay is arguably one of the most ambitious Xbox One zombie games available and is definitely a must-have for any fan of the flesh eating kind. Despite its few noticeable issues including glitches as well as the lack of multiplayer, State of Decay allows players to build their own communities and scavenge the world for supplies and weapons to fight another day. It’s the closest we’ve got to having The Walking Dead TV series recreated in a video game.
If you like the sound of exploring a large open-world sandbox which takes place during a zombie apocalypse, State of Decay is the game for you. There is a wide variety of weapons and vehicles in the game to keep things tasty, as well as supplies that need to be scavenged from the world in order to make improvements to your base such as expanding your capacity or upgrading your guard towers. It’s a solid game and lays the foundations nicely for State of Decay 2.
Thanks to Xbox One’s backwards compatibility feature, gamers on Microsoft’s console are now able to experience one of the greatest expansions ever released for a game, Undead Nightmare. Released back in 2010 as DLC for Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare offers everything you could want from a wild-west zombie apocalypse and more.
Players keep control of John Marston as he seeks to cure the world of the undead, and along the way he meets some interesting characters, to say the least. The story lasts for roughly 6 hours, but there are plenty of additional hours that can be had through exploring the game’s open-world and completing side-quests, as well as saving settlements from being overrun.
The fact that a six year-old DLC is still considered one of the best zombies ever made speaks volumes on just how good Undead Nightmare actually is. Now that it’s available on the Xbox One, it has to be considered as one of the best zombie games for Xbox One, if not all-time.
Dead Rising 4 is an open-world zombie game and is the fourth game in the Dead Rising franchise. In Dead Rising 4, players return as Frank West who has returned to Willamette, Colorado during the Christmas season, which has been overwhelmed by another zombie outbreak. The game released in December so the Christmas theme will tie in perfectly with its release.
Unlike other Dead Rising games, Dead Rising 4 will be the first game to not feature a timer and will, therefore, allow players the freedom to explore and play how they want without feeling constrained to a time limit. If you’re new to the series, that’s good news as not only will it make for a much more enjoyable experience, but it will allow more time to play around with the game’s crafting. Dead Rising 4 will feature in-depth weapon customisation as well as vehicles for players to use to mow down hordes of the undead.
Dead Rising 4 will definitely be one of the best zombies games for Xbox One releasing in 2016.
2) Dying Light
If you’re looking for a zombie game for Xbox One, you won’t find much better than Dying Light, the open-world zombie survival game developed by Techland. In Dying Light, players play as Kyle Crane, an undercover operative who has been sent in to infiltrate the quarantine zone in the city of Harran. After landing in the city, Crane gets caught up in a battle for survival between several warring factions and the undead hordes of zombies.
Dying Light’s gameplay is very similar to Dead Island which makes melee combat extremely satisfying. However, one of Dying Light’s key features is parkour which allows you to run and climb your way through the city’s streets and jump from roof to roof to avoid the zombies that lurk below. At night the infected become more dangerous as their senses are heightened and they deal more damage. But there are also special infected who roam the streets at night that you must do all that you can to avoid.
The expansion, The Following, takes players to the countryside just outside of Harran City and introduces vehicles to drive as well as a new storyline and some new features. In Dying Light you can also expect your traditional levelling and perk system as well as crating. Overall, Dying Light is one of the best Xbox One zombie games in my opinion.
State of Decay was a huge hit and set the bar extremely high when it comes to open-world zombie survival games, so it’s no surprise that its sequel, State of Decay 2, is highly anticipated amongst fans of the zombie genre and is set to be the zombie game for Xbox One to play.
The game will put the emphasis once again on survival by allowing players to build up their own communities to survive as long as possible. It will include all the features we love from the first game but will take it up a notch by adding multiplayer and co-op play, a much requested feature for State of Decay. Players can work together to build lasting communities and tell their own unique story within an interconnected world that remembers the choices you’ve made throughout.
The game has the potential to be the best Xbox One zombie game so far when it releases next year. Stay tuned for more information!
